Probationers

Regent

One member of the Management Team (the 'Regent') is the main professional counsellor of the probationer. He/She, on behalf of the Head Teacher, will monitor the progress of the probationer within subject areas and will be responsible for ensuring that the probationer is introduced to the school as a whole and is encouraged to participate in the social life of the school. An orientation/induction programme will be drawn up to make this possible (see attached sheet).

The Regent will also clarify to the probationer his relationship with Principal Teacher (subject) in support and assessment. The Regent is also responsible for drawing up and reviewing documentation used within the school for probationer reports and references.

Principal Teacher

The Principal Teacher has a vital role to play in the probationer service. He/She, in consultation with the Regent, should allocate the work load to the probationer and carefully explain the support available and the means of dealing with problems as they arise. He/She should discuss the role of the classroom teacher with a probationer, highlighting the responsibilities and expectations of the school. He/She should give advice in good teaching practice, class control, homework, administrative procedures, use of visual aids etc. Probationers should be encouraged to participate in producing work and in departmental policy decisions. The Principal Teacher must ensure that each probationer has an up-to-date curriculum or scheme of work for each class and explain the standard required at each stage. He/She will also be required to produce reports on a probationer at times agreed with the Regent.

New Members of Staff

All new members of staff will undergo the orientation/induction as for probationers.
